Job Title:

Sheet Line Extruder Operator  


Position Summary:

The Operator has the responsibility of setup and maximizing production while ensuring quality for the extruder line assigned.  This position takes direction from and reports directly to the Shift Supervisor.


Essential Functions & Key Responsibilities:


  • Work safely and ensure others in department are working safely
  • Must be aware of and follow all safety policies, JSA’s, including personal protection equipment, lock-out/tag-out, housekeeping, MSDS, etc.
  • Responsible to identify, report any work hazards, must eliminate hazards within ability.
  • Responsible for machine running conditions
  • Responsible to assure that all other employees working in or around the machine system are educated about and following product specifications, housekeeping standards and safety standards.
  • Responsible to assist in training of temps, packers, and other operators working on the system.
  • Operate extruder & downstream equipment ie: chrome rolls/sheet line and winders; make adjustments, set temperatures, set length and width.
  • Troubleshoot quality and processing problems and make corrections accordingly
  • Clean up, change over and setup extruder including mixers, loaders, grinders, former, gear pump, screen changer, set gauge and winder tension properly, etc.
  • Figure percentages of and setup virgin regrind, color and additives, shovel material in prescribed time with minimal waste.
  • Must be skilled in the use of SPC. Techniques to control the production process.
  • Must be able to accurately measure machine performance, scrap, waste, and downtime and be able to develop improvement techniques to improve efficiencies and reduce downtime, scrap and changeover times.
  • Wrap rolls, Change rolls and weigh them and record info on production control data sheet,
  • Complete production reports and all paperwork as assigned
  • Good attendance and punctuality required


Essential Functions:

  • Start up Extruder, Chrome rolls/ Sheetline and Winders, Monitor all machine process parameters.
  • Adjust all machine process parameters based upon SPC criteria.
  • Set up, adjust, and maintain extruder die.
  • Set polish roll gap.
  • Monitor, adjust and control material and color blends.
  • Maintain and clean hoppers.
  • Operate and maintain grinder.
  • Operate and maintain gear pump.
  • Operate and maintain mixer.
  • Maintain screen changer.
  • Maintain housekeeping
  • Follow all approved JSA and safety methods.
  • Follow all lock-out/tag-out procedures.
  • Change over gauge and sheet width,
  • Line out production process in a timely manner with minimal waste.
  • Wrap and Weigh Rolls
  • Monitor and maintain sheet quality within agreed upon specifications using SPC techniques.
  • Shut down all equipment.
  • Other tasks as identified by the shift supervisor.


Marginal Functions:

  • Organize packing requirements
  • Ensure line is clean, neat, and orderly
  • Do some maintenance task.
  • Cross-train with other positions to cover during vacations, illnesses.
  • Backup and assist maintenance as directed
  • Miscellaneous duties as directed by supervisor


Candidate Requirements:

  • Ability to work well in a team environment & motivate others within the team
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision
  • A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent required
  • A minimum of 1-3 years experience required
  • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures
  • Normal Dexterity  & Climbing Requirements
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds, 10 times per hour
  • Ability to lift 70 pounds, infrequently
  • Basic computer skills – data entry and process control inputs and monitors.
  • Know how to properly use hand tools and use of a Micrometer and tape measure
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of percentages, fractions, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. 
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
