Material Handler


Position Summary:

The Shipping Associate is responsible for preparing and ensuring outgoing shipments are packaged and shipped to the customer’s specifications.  All incoming shipments are properly received and placed into the correct storage area according to FIFO standards. They must ensure that all areas of production have received the proper materials based on order requirements.


Essential Functions & Key Responsibilities:

  • Examines outgoing shipments to ensure customer packing/loading specifications are met and ensures proper spacers, fillers and productive padding is used.
  • Works in teams to insure goals of department regarding safety, quality, etc., are met.
  • Works safely to prevent on-the-job injuries by maintaining awareness of environmental activities and applying Company guidelines.
  • Transports correct materials to production points by comparing pick sheet data to warehouse items.
  • Calculate average footage of material in order to prepare the Finished Goods Tags.
  • Compares identifying information and counts, weighs, or measures items of incoming and outgoing shipments to verify information against bills of lading and/or packing slip.
  • Packages production and/or finished goods from Slitter Department to meet specs of customer.
  • Prepares items for shipment.
  • Operates fork/clamp truck to move, convey, or hoist shipments from shipping and receiving platform to storage or work area.
  • Verifies bills of lading and/or packing slip for accuracy.
  • Records all material specific information on manifest.
  • Selects proper tools, equipment and attachments to accomplish handling of materials.
  • Builds racks and uses plastic/metal bander to prepare material for shipping.
  • Create shipping labels by entering material specific information into database to generate the finished goods tag (FGT) and affix to proper skid.
  • Handles, maneuvers, and lifts skids weighing 17-50 lbs.
  • Maintains inventory of shipping materials and supplies.
  • Suggests improvements in work methods and procedures by discussing with team and managers.
  • Locates information needed to ship or receive materials in an effective manner.
  • Troubleshoots work related problems by evaluating issues, discussing with team and management
  • Completes forklift checklists at the beginning of each shift and proper maintenance is being completed.
  • Completes Cycle Counts
  • Suggests improvements in work methods and procedures.
  • Supports 5S initiative in Warehouse/Shipping area.


Candidate Requirements:

  • Qualifications include high school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Desire to learn new skills and work in a team environment.
  • Verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office required (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Lean/Continuous improvement oriented.
  • Minimum of 6 months material handling (lift truck operation), shipping and receiving experience required.

  • The work is performed in a manufacturing setting. The noise level in the work environment is loud and requires the use of PPE for hearing conservation.  Additional PPE required includes safety glasses and safety-toe footwear.  Hygiene requirements include the use of hairnets and beard nets.  
  • Strong knowledge of shipping/receiving, warehousing and material handling operations, methods and practices including Bar Code Technology
