Senior Laboratory Technician


Position Summary:

The Senior Laboratory Technician  supports the Laboratory Manager and the Technical Manager by conducting research and development testing for competitive products, current products and innovative new products. The Senior laboratory Technician also develops new or modified methods for testing new products or in support of innovative processes for Novolex, searching and maintaining the formulation database at the direction of the Technical Manager; troubleshooting and resolving problems related to laboratory equipment and testing; conducting quality assurance compliance testing; and helping with special projects as assigned.  The Senior Laboratory Technician will be responsible for working with Instrumentation or Equipment manufacturers to bring new testing capabilities to the laboratory and will train other lab personnel to conduct new methods of testing.

Essential Functions & Key Responsibilities:

  • Takes a lead role in projects directed toward developing new laboratory methods or testing new products.  Attends and participates in group and project meetings.
  • Publishes reports within the company documenting the development of new methods or significant new products.  Publishes or presents scientific papers within Novolex or externally when appropriate to communicate advances in laboratory science.
  • Conducts testing in the laboratory using both routine and specialized methods, records test results and reports them to the Technical Manager.
  • Keeps lab equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; scheduling preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
  • Manages Certifications and Calibrations of methods and instruments in the Laboratory.  Documents information by maintaining daily logs and equipment record books; record keeping compliant to ISO 17025 or similar standard and SQF requirements.
  • Resolves problems by examining and evaluating data; performing a root cause analysis and selecting corrective steps.
  • Completes projects by assisting project team; Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications and learning new test methods.
  • Maintains a membership in an appropriate Professional Society.
  • Maintains formulation database, including searching for relevant formulation numbers, and assigning new formulation numbers at the direction of Technical Manager
  • Enhances laboratory and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Works in a cooperative and constructive manner with the Technical Manager, Customer Service Representatives, Salespersons, and Production Personnel to ensure good operation of the Plant Site and Business Unit.


Candidate Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Advanced Degree in a laboratory science is preferred.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in polymer testing and lab environment preferred
  • Demonstrated record of project or scientific leadership
  • Knowledge of plastic film testing protocols
  • Familiar with quality control documentation: establishing QC documentation protocol
  • Self-starter and able to work with little or no supervision
  • Good mechanical aptitude; able to work with extrusion and analytical equipment
  • Able to problem solve extrusion and laboratory equipment issues
  • Able to create/follow and develop laboratory procedures
  • Excellent communication skills; both verbal and written
  • Computer literate.  Able to learn other computer software related to laboratory equipment
  • Chemistry Techniques, knowledge of Instrumental analysis and Spectroscopy, including FTIR, GC, MS, Dynamic Mechanical Testing, Rheology, GPC, Lab Environment, Lab Testing, Creating a Safe, Effective Environment, Equipment Calibration, Supply Management, Self-Development.
