Job Title:

Director of Technology, Rigid plastics


Position Summary:

Plans and directs research and development activities for rigid plastics products and evaluates new resin technologies

  • Run trials for new molds and materials across IM and Thermoforming facilities
  • Drive innovation through the business by working with the strategic suppliers on new products with high intellectual property value


Essential Functions & Key Responsibilities:

  • Reviews and advises on all capital equipment and major process changes at all N.A. IM facilities
  • Assists and sets up Quality systems where required.  Advises on resin associated quality issues and assists where necessary on root cause analysis and investigation.
  • Suggests cost reductions on processes and formulations.  Sets targets for cost reductions in these areas; monitors progress and produces regular updates for Management.
  • Coordinates activities of team members engaged in testing, collecting, and laboratory analysis of products and blends for new products, quality control of current products and analysis of competitor products
  • Evaluates performance records of processes and physical operations
  • Identifies, in conjunction with marketing and Sales management, promising areas of research or technology that address unmet needs and have large potential markets
  • Communicates to senior management overview of all products under development, and their stage of development.
  • Tracks industry trends, relevant legislation, and competitor activities.
  • Interfaces with Sales and customers in the development of new opportunities and problem resolution of existing products.
  • Develops and implements processes to determine “best practices” for manufacturing procedures.


Candidate Requirements:

  • BS in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Engineering or related field and ten years related industry experience.
  • Multi-plant experience required
  • RJG training a plus
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations in English.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and customers
  • Working knowledge of Design, Development, ERP systems, and Microsoft Outlook applications
  • Must be able to travel
  • Previous experience of product research and development in injection molding and thermoforming environment
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and procedures used to manufacture injection molding and thermoforming, including lab testing, quoting & production scheduling
  • Advanced computer skills with various software products and programs
  • Strong people management skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to prioritize job tasks
  • Ability to problem solve with good critical thinking skills
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills
