Job Title:

Quality/EHS Manager

 

Position Summary:

The Quality/EHS Manager directly reports to the Plant Manager and works under the direction from the Director or Quality and Food and Safety and the Regional EHS Manager to accomplish the Quality and EHS goals.    The QEHS Manager will plan, implement and supervise quality, food safety, employee safety and environmental initiatives and act as an important member of the organization’s QA and EHS teams, as well as the packaging plant management team.   The QEHS Manager is the SQF Practitioner for the facility.

 

Essential Functions & Key Responsibilities:

  • EHS
    • Analyze data and complete environmental reports
    • Respond to inquiries and support tasks assigned from the Regional EHS Manager (or designee)
    • Responsible for spill response for specific location
    • Lead and document safety committee meetings, action items and follow-up. 
    • Conduct weekly EHS compliance audits, track findings and follow-up actions.   Provide feedback to Plant Manager and Regional EHS Manager.
    • Administer monthly EHS training by working with the Plant Manager and supervisors to schedule employees for training, confirm training occurred and send a delinquency notice (monthly) if training is missed.
    • Conduct and refresh Job Hazard Analysis
    • Conduct accident investigations and maintain OSHA logs
    • Communicate with OSHA and other regulatory agencies as required
    • Conduct annual LOTO reviews and create LOTO procedures for new equipment with support from plant manager and maintenance or engineering.

 

  • Daily and Regular Quality Activities
    • Conduct internal audits for QA and EHS to plan
    • Perform and report on daily verification audit as defined by the QA Management team
    • Review plant documentation for completeness, perform quality control checks as defined
    • Trend quality information, lead continuous improvement teams
    • Report required information to customers
    • Report to management as defined
    • Receive and inspect any ‘return to inventory’ stock
    • Understand quality requirements, place product on hold and release from hold or determine scrap based on critical quality requirements

 

  • Standard Operating Procedures
    • Contribute to establishing and maintaining the standard operating procedures in the facility
    • Conduct with training and refresher training throughout the plant
    • Maintain training records
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of training processes

 

  • Raw Materials
    • Understand raw material requirements for paper, inks and coatings
    • Review certificates of conformance from suppliers
    • Understand impact of raw material regulatory requirements on finished products
    • Report any raw material non-conformance and work with QA team and supplier on corrective actions
    • Participate in raw material testing for conformance process
  • Food Safety Program
    • Be knowledgeable in BPC food safety programs, SQF, HACCP and GMP.
    • Train plant management and floor employees in food safety programs
    • Responsible for support tasks, including but not limited to facility inspections, pest control program and plant sanitation program
    • Direct plant janitors in daily duties
    • Ensure environmental testing is performed on time, confirm results are within specification
    • Participate and be the plant spokesperson during customer audits and third party audits of the food safety program
    • Participate with QA Team to continually improve the Food Safety program

 

  • Traceability and Recall
    • Perform mock recalls to plan
    • Address corrective actions in case of recall failure
    • Ensure plant supervisors are trained to conduct mock recalls
    • Take the lead responsibility in case of product recall for the specific plant

 

  • Labeling Promotions
    • Be knowledgeable in the organization’s procedures for labeling security products
    • Train plant management and employees in labeling procedures and requirements
    • Ensure required forms and documents are current and distributed for use
    • Reconcile label use and waste on a daily basis and at the conclusion of the promotion
    • Interact with promotion organization providing security for labeling activities
    • Ensure security programs are established and monitored including set-up, issuing of badges and collection of all documents, badges, etc. upon completion
    • Participate with QA Team to improve labeling procedures and protocol

 

  • Customer Interaction
    • Participate and act as lead for facility in customer meetings
    • Manage new graphics or graphics revisions for packaging products and shipping cartons.
    • Coordinate activities with supplier(s) for ink color approvals by customers
    • Assure that modified documents relating to customer changes are distributed to Manufacturing and Management
    • Ensure plant is knowledgeable in customer requirements
    • Work with QA Management Team to define quality checks required on new products to ensure manufacture to specifications
    • Coordinate sample collection for outside testing
    • Participate in various customer programs
    • Submit Certificates of Conformance as required

 

  • Corrective / Preventive Action and Continuous Improvement
    • Promote use of the Quality Jacket system to report and track internal quality issues
    • Receive and respond to complaints
    • Create corrective and preventive actions, ensure approved actions are completed
    • Conduct verification audits to verify actions are effective
    • Participate on Continuous Improvement Teams
    • Analyze data, offer ideas and interact as a contributing member of the team.

 

Candidate Requirements:

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED.  Additional education is preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Capable of working independently with a high level of integrity and commitment to a zero defect environment
  • Capable of communicating with all levels of internal and external customers.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Knowledge of EHS Regulations
  • Experience with quality systems such as ISO, TQM, or Six Sigma.
  • Experience using Continuous Improvement and Lean concepts.
  • Experience with regulatory systems, GMP, HACCP food safety environment is a plus.
  • Knowledge and ability to establish internal audit system and ensure external audit compliance.
  • Demonstrated problem solving, root cause analysis and corrective action skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects and work as needed to meet timelines and achieve goals.
